March 6, 1776 South Carolina Fifty Pounds “Trophies”
South Carolina. March 6, 1776 Act. Fifty Pounds. “Trophies” vignette. “By Order of Congress” Bearer Note. Split repairs and tape. PMG Net graded Fine-12.
Fr. SC-127. This Fifty Pounds denomination is extremely rare. Only 3,700 notes were authorized to be printed in 1776. This uniquely styled note is printed on both sides and has the first line of its text reading “This Bill entitles the Bearer to Fifty Pounds Currency by order of the Congress, March 6, 1776.” It is the second highest denomination of the issue, and as such was printed in a larger size measuring 3.5” tall x 5.25” wide. This note has a sharply printed circular military “Trophies” vignette. There are some old deft, edge split repairs plus a very thin reinforcement strip of early archival fiber tape along the horizontal reverse centerfold. Overall, it is far above average, superior to most seen and is definitely missing in most collections.
