April 10, 1778 South Carolina Twenty Shillings “Horse”

South Carolina. April 10, 1778. Twenty Shillings. “Horse” vignette. Conservation. Very Fine.

Fr. SC-151. The Twenty Shillings denomination with the rare “Horse” vignette is perhaps the most elusive of this entire April 10, 1778 issue. This note shows even overall wear from circulation for its grade, while also being very well centered upon the paper. There is some conservation with a deft seal to the centerfold split. The printed text, border designs and horse vignette on this note being well printed and very clear. Signed in brown ink by John Beale and John Peronneau. The blank reverse is clean and free of any period notations, just having a small old collector price in pencil. This denomination is considered to be very rare, and as such is valued in the 5th Edition of Newman at $2,000 in Very Fine, showing dashes in higher grade.
