Rare 1786 Rhode Island “Land Bank” Related Mortgage Bond
June 20, 1793-Dated. Partially-Printed Document. Scituate, Rhode Island Land Bank Mortgage Bond Form. Signed to “Joseph Clarke Esq., General Treasurer” of Rhode Island. Signed by, “John Atwood.” Choice Very Fine.
This is an extremely rare example of this official Rhode Island Mortgage Bond Yearly Payment Form, one of only two we have encountered. The black printed text is sharp and clear, with well written rich brown manuscript portions and signatures. This bond measures 6” x 8” on period laid paper that is quite clean, and has a nice overall appearance. It is a bond for John Atwood to the State of Rhode Island to be paid in full by the year 1799, Signed “John Atwood,” “Samuel Merry” and “John Harris.” It reads, in part:

“The condition of the above Obilgation is such, That if the said John Atwood, his Heirs, Executers or Administrators, shall pay unto the said Joseph Clarke, or his Successor in said Office, the Sum of Eleven shillings & two pence in Lawful Money Bills of said State, or in Silver or Gold equivalent, as aforesaid, at or before the twentieth Day of June A.D. 1792 - then this Obilgation shall be void, and said Sum shall discharge One Year’s Interest of the principal Sum of a Mortgage, bearing equal Date herewith; but upon Failure shall be in full Force.”

The manuscript portions are well written, in deep rich brown which are clear and easily readable. It is very deeply printed in black, with significant traces of original press text embossing remaining within the period, laid paper. Docket on the reverse reads: “John Atwood - 6 Interest Bond” with some accounting numbers below. Extremely rare.
