Colony of Massachusetts Bay. August 18, 1775. Paul Revere Engraved “Sword in Hand” Issue Note. Eleven Shillings. PCGS graded Very Fine-35.
Fr. MA-167. This historic 1775 date Revolutionary War Period, Paul Revere, Jr. Engraved “Sword in Hand” note has a very impressive, clean solid appearance, with printed details and eye appeal of Extremely Fine. The signatures of Joseph Wheeler and Thomas Plympton are fully clear and readable having been written in red and brown ink. The printed text and designs are clear and attractive. This Copper Plate was re-engraved by Revere, the “Due” date being changed from August 18, 1778 to the following year of “1779” as intended. The wonderful design on its reverse side has a vignette of a Massachusetts “Minutemen” shown holding a copy of the MAGNA CHARTA in his right hand, and his Sword in hand, at the ready, in his left. The historic motto above the Minuteman reads: “Issued in defence of American Liberty.”

This rare 11 shillings denomination has four nice full margins on both its face and back. It is well centered and is very clean, being even in light circulation. It has deft sealed edge splits at centerfold for which its holder states minor restorations. This important Paul Revere engraved issue note is superior to most seen regardless of denomination. Paul Revere’s engraved “Sword In Hand” notes are considered by currency collectors to be a great “classic” of early American currency. A premium quality example that is excellent for display.
