August 18, 1775 Paul Revere Engraved “Sword in Hand”
Colony of Massachusetts Bay. August 18, 1775. Seventeen Shillings. Redemption Date of August 18, 1778. Paul Revere Engraved “Sword in Hand” Issue. PCGS graded Very Fine-35.

Fr. MA-169. This is an original and authentic Paul Revere engraved “Sword In Hand” note with the payable redemption due date within the printed text of August 18, 1778. It is printed on the standard thick, coarse paper stock with a small oval vignette of a Sailing Ship at Dock at the lower left of the face. This crisp clean evenly circulated example of this scarce seventeen shillings denomination is missing in most collections. The holder notes restorations, UR corner replaced. Three signatures were required on this higher denomination. The extremely popular reverse design shows a large central illustration of a Massachusetts “Minuteman” holding his Sword at ready in one hand and a copy of the “MAGNA CHARTA” in his other. The printed legend above the Minuteman reads, “Issued in defence of American Liberty.”

This note is signed by; Joseph Wheeler in colorful blue, Joseph Cushing in faint red and Thomas Plympton who’s deep brown signature is bold. Only 10,000 notes were authorized to be printed with three different typeset “due dates” 1778, 1779 and 1780. Therefore only 3,333 notes could have been issued of this genuine 1778 redemption date subtype. The 5th edition Eric Newman reference book, “The Early Paper Money of America” lists a valuation for this note of $7,500 in Very Fine. An important, historic and very pleasing example of this authentic Paul Revere engraved “Sword in Hand” design type.
