Rare November 27, 1729 Act North Carolina Five Pounds
North Carolina. November 27, 1729 Act. Five Pounds. Handwritten-Manuscript "Sealed" Bill of Credit. Contemporary Counterfeit. PCGS graded Very Fine-30.
Fr. NC-34CFT. The very first 1729 Act Five Pounds. Handwritten-Manuscript "Sealed" Bill of Credit we have offered at auction, although in past decades we have sold several Three Pounds denomination notes. This very rare, extremely early North Carolina note is of the fourth official issue on the colony. This Handwritten-Manuscript form is on very clean, high quality laid, watermarked period paper, produced prior to the existence of a Printing Press available in the colony. The text and designs are extremely vivid, crisp and attractive with “Five Pounds” at top written in Red, the text below is written in blue. (Signatures) include: Wm. Downing, E.(dward) Mosely, Cullen Pollack, Thos.(mas) Swann, and J.(ohn) Lovick. Across the face is the very boldly written word “Counterfeit.” Its holder states, apparent center split tape repaired, small edge tears, damage in lower left corner, which is all accurate. The large central Paper and Wax Seal is fully intact and attached nicely between the signatures near bottom. It is magnificent in its quality and stands as one of the very Finest known on this issue. The blank reverse has the notation: “Recd. of William Timen.” Extremely Rare, either genuine or contemporary counterfeit, this is an exemplary specimen is a certain highlight for any North Carolina or Colonial currency rarity collection.
