North Carolina. May 17, 1783. Ten Shillings. Contemporary Counterfeit. PCGS graded Extremely Fine-45.
Fr. NC-205CFT. False signatures of McCulloch and Hunt. Border cuts with text and titles. Bottom left, Sailing Ship off shore line Fort, motto COMMERCIO. Obligation on back; imprint of Thomas Davis, 1783. Rare series and scarce counterfeit. Genuine bills from the series are very rare. The plate’s lack of details stands out, although this note is better inked than other seen. Holder notes minor edge damage at right. The right end has a wavy, slightly ragged cut that is into the border cut. Unobtrusive small penned name written on back. Similar to the Ford XV sale example, just trimmed in slightly more. The reverse is likely the side this note was trimmed from its sheet as it have excellent centering within four full margins. Not often encountered, specially in this Extremely Fine-45 quality.
