April 2, 1776 North Carolina Five Dollars “Triton” Vignette
North Carolina. April 2, 1776. Halifax Issue. Five Dollars. “Triton” vignette. Choice Very Fine.
Fr. NC-162b. This impressive 1776 dated Revolutionary War note has a notation on its blank reverse as being part of a “168 Dollars” payment, having further notations shown in £ (British Pounds) below and signed as received from a “Col. Taylor.” This note is well centered and very clean and boldly printed in appearance, with light even circulation. The centerfold appears to have some deft conservation. Three signatures are clearly readable written in brown ink including; William Haywood, William Williams and David Sumner. An intriguing vignette design on this popular North Carolina currency issue, certainly one of the most interesting of the fifty-six different notes to complete the April 2, 1776 series. Even the noted Boyd Collection was not complete. The “Triton” vignette remains well-printed, sharply detailed and distinct in every aspect.
