March 5, 1776 “New York-Water Works” Uncut Sheet
New-York. City of New York. March 5, 1776. “New York-Water Works.” Uncut Sheet of Eight Notes. All (8) Four Shillings Denomination Notes. Gem Crisp Uncirculated.
Fr. NY-196. This Uncut Sheet of Eight (8) 4 shillings notes is exceedingly rare as only a few exist of all denominations, inclusive for the three New York-Water Works issues. This sheet is as described in the Newman reference book, “The Early Paper Money of America” within its special appendix on “Uncut Sheets.” This eight note sheet is printed with four vertical notes in horizontal pairs, thus they are “Tete-Beche” pairs between the rows. Each of the individual notes grade Very Choice to Superb Gem Crisp Uncirculated.

These Eight notes are well printed upon a specially made two-part laminated paper, having brown coarser paper on the back side. The faces are printed in both red and black inked text within a decorative surrounding frame work. There is a red denomination “protector” near the center. Significant original text press embossing remains within the paper, attesting to its wonderful originality. The back sides of each note display a woodcut vignette of the new Water Works Steam Power Pump, with the name of the printer, “H.(ugh) Gaine - New-York” below. Each note is hand signed in rich brown ink by “Benj.(amin) Bragge.” Some minor horizontal fold creases noted between the horizontal note pairs. This is a highly significant and important Colonial New York currency rarity. This 4 shillings Uncut Sheet is Possibly Unique. (8 notes).
