Extraordinary October 17, 1780 Maryland Currency Rarity The Finest Certified $1/6 PCGS Graded Very Fine-30
State of Maryland. October 17, 1780. One Sixth of a Dollar. PCGS graded Very Fine-30.
Fr. MD-125. One of the rarest of all Maryland Colonial Currency issues and emitted during the Revolutionary War, finer in quality than the Newman plate$1/5th shown illustrated on page 178 of THE EARLY PAPER MONEY OF AMERICA. These October 17, 1780 notes are far more rare than the always popular historic “Gunpowder” Political and Allegorical issue of July 26, 1775. Even so, notes on the 1780 issue are listed in Newman at about a 1/3rd value as compared to the July 26, 1775 most likely due to their more standard typeset design and appearance. Even so, there is no value listed in any grade above $5,000 in Fine quality in Newman, and the Friedberg book simply states “Extremely Rare” providing no valuation point whatsoever. Only a tiny amount of these very small denomination “small denomination” bills totaling just $24,000 inclusive of all denominations, were authorized to be issued. Only a handful of complete notes on this issue are known in all grades.

“Printed by F. Green” having a typeset face and a unique border design with the State Arms of Maryland prominently displayed at center on the reverse. This current example is well printed and sharp in detail having excellent centering within four full margins on both its face and back. The signature of John Callahan is well written in rich brown ink and easily readable. The paper appears very clean with light circulation, the margin edges and corners appear sharp. An amazing opportunity as this issue and denomination is lacking in virtually all Colonial and specialized Maryland Currency collections. It is also the Finest Known.
