June 22, 1790 “MIND YOUR BUSINESS” New York Note
New York, June 22, 1790, One Penny. “New York Manufacturing Society.” with “Mind your Business” motto, Small Change Note with printed text signature “H. Ten Brook, Treasurer, Harris 23, PMG graded Very Fine-20.
“Mind your Business” famous motto first created by Benjamin Franklin together with a sun dial for use on the 1776 Continental Dollar, and in 1787 on America’s first official struck coin under the U.S. Constitution, the “FUGIO” Cent. This is an extremely popular and historic Federal Period “Small Change” private issue note, signed in its printed text, “H. Ten Brook, Treasurer.” The left and right side margins bear the text “Printed by Hugh Gaine - New York.” It is well printed in black having light, even circulation on very clean bright period wove paper. Its PMG holder notes rust, previously mounted as seen only on the reverse. This type is listed and illustrated in the 2023 Newman reference on page 281, where the entire issue is not priced in any grade. This extremely rare One Penny denomination is popular with collectors as it shares the same historic text, here printed on the central reverse, “MIND YOUR BUSINESS” being the famous Benjamin Franklin motto as shown.
