Impressive May 10, 1775 Connecticut Contemporary Counterfeit Forty Shillings PMG Apt. Choice Abt. New-55

Colony of Connecticut. May 10, 1775. Forty Shillings. Contemporary Counterfeit. Restoration of center split (In error). PCGS graded Apparent Choice About New-55.

Fr. CT-182CF. This is a very high grade and quite lovely example of a scarce, listed Contemporary Counterfeit note. These British made counterfeits were produced during the Revolutionary War by Henry Dawkins while upon the H.M.S. Phoenix, in New York Harbor during the British occupation of that city. It is colorfully signed in bright red ink with three full signatures, well embossed showing its originality, with a small centerfold edge split at right. This cataloger sees NO Repair as the light centerfold is original and the tiny edge split not sealed, apparently making the PMG “Apparent” plus their comment erroneous. This is a crisp, well centered note and one of the finest examples of this historic Counterfeit we have seen.
