BENJAMIN FRANKLIN Printed May 1, 1758 Horse Note
Delaware. May 1, 1758. Fifteen Shillings. “Horse” vignette. BENJAMIN FRANKLIN Printed Issue. PCGS graded Fine-15.
Fr. DE-59. This conservatively graded French & Indian War period Delaware Colonial note has the legend “Printed by B. FRANKLIN” typeset at lower reverse. Noted on its holder is restorations. It has a very clean, evenly circulated appearance that is quite attractive. It is well centered on both its face and back having full margins. The text and designs are clear, including the May 1758 date and pleasing “Horse” vignette. We previously offered two examples; EAHA Auction June 26, 2015, Lot 137 graded Fine with conservation, selling for $1,560 and in our August 22, 2014 Auction, Lot 216, graded About VF with conservation sold for $2,125. This current example appears significantly finer in its quality and eye appeal than the illustrated plate note shown in “The Early Paper Money of America” by Eric Newman on page 123.
