JOHN NIXON Signed March 1, 1769 Pennsylvania Note Signed by who made the First Public Proclamation Reading of the Declaration of Independence July 8, 1776!
JOHN NIXON (1733–1808). was a financier and official from Philadelphia who served as a militia officer in the American Revolutionary War. On July 8, 1776, he made the very First Public Proclamation of the Reading of the Declaration of Independence from the steps of the Pennsylvania State House.
Fr. PA-132. Pennsylvania. March 1, 1769. 1 Pound Ten Shillings. Plate A. Authentic and original fully issued note, Signed by “Jn Nixon” in deep dark brown ink, PCGS graded Very Fine-30. Conservatively graded and noted on the holder for restorations. It appears very even having light circulation being sharply printed with a pleasing appearance and good centering. This current note is finer in quality and its eye appeal than the Stack’s Ford/Boyd Collection specimen of this denomination, there said to be the Finest Known. Historical in importance being signed by John Nixon who on July 8, 1776, made the very First Public Proclamation of the Reading of the Declaration of Independence from the steps of the Pennsylvania State House. In our June 3, 2016 EAHA Auction we sold lot #2113 being a similar signed note, which brought $3,900. Very Rare.
