Colonial Coinage/Lord Baltimore: Certified Lord Baltimore Shilling
(1658) Maryland "Lord Baltimore" Shilling, PCGS graded Very Fine-30. A pleasing example of this Colonial rarity, with medium-gray toning and virtually complete legends. For the grade, the surfaces are glossy and smooth. This appears to be a late state of the dies, showing buckling on the obverse. A natural, shallow depression appears at the base of the bust. "Lord Baltimore" Shillings always create excitement when they hit the market and we're always thrilled to offer them to our audience. In 1658, Cecil Calvert ordered silver coinage struck for the use of the settlers in Maryland, in the New World. The profile of Lord Baltimore is prominent on the obverse, the Baltimore Family Arms on the reverse, the legend reading "INCREASE AND BE MULTIPLIED" on the reverse in Latin. This piece was a contemporary of the Massachusetts Oak and Pine Tree pieces and was one of the few silver pieces actually struck for the American colonies. In fact, Maryland did not see another silver type until over 100 years later when Chalmers struck his threepences, sixpences, and shillings in 1783.
