Colonel Richard Irving Dodge, Our Wild Indians: Thirty-Three Years' Personal Experience Among the Red Men of the Great West (Hartford: A. D. Worthington and Company, 1882), first edition, 653 pages, illustrations, marbled boards with brown-leather spine and corners and gold lettering, 8vo (9" x 6"). The introduction is by General William Tecumsah Sherman, to whom the book is dedicated. Col. Richard Dodge (1827-1895) spent nearly 34 years on the wild frontier, and in 1875 led a scientific expedition into the Black Hills to investigate the rumors of a gold strike spread by Gen. George Armstrong Custer. During his lengthy travels, he had experiences with such colorful Western characters as Calamity Jane and California Joe. Dodge City, Kansas, is named after him. In his preface to this impressive volume, Dodge writes, "Whenever I have found that my ideas differed from those of "an authority," I have taken the case directly to the Indians themselves. My position as commanding officer-‘Big Chief'-enabled me always to get a hearing and an answer on any subject; and my well-known friendship for the race caused the Indians to give me more frank confidence than a white man usually obtains. I have thus been enabled to get at facts; to correct the errors of accepted Indian ‘authorities'." The book is in very good condition with wear on the corners of the binding and some separation of the endpaper along the spine inside the front cover.

Shipping: Books & Catalogs (view shipping information)
