Early Republic Copper 1/4 Real ND (c. 1810-1821), this fascinating and previously unlisted little coin is struck in the style of the issues of Gran Colombia during the periods of Republican revolt. It is very similar to the copper coinage in Venezuela during the same era. The obverse features a neat Lima monogram and the reverse displays a large 4, presumably for 1/4 Real. Some authorities believe that this coin was struck by the forces of San Martin in 1821-22 during the occupation of the Argentine forces which were subsequently defeated in Peru and driven out. Choice VF, 3.13 grams.
