A) U.S. Springfield Model 1884 Trapdoor Cadet Rifle. Low-arch breechblock, marked "US / MODEL / 1884", with the eagle/shield motif next to "U.S. / SPRINGFIELD" on the lock plate. Blade front and Buffington rear sights, with "V / P / eagle head / P" on the upper left and "I" on top. Smooth straight grip stock, with two "U" marked barrel bands, "U.S." marked buttplate, and cleaning rod. A SWP/1890 boxed cartouche is stamped on the left side of the stock with a circled "P" behind the trigger guard.
BBL: 29 1/2 inch round

Gauge: 45-70
Finish: blue/casehardened

Condition: Fine. The rifle retains 40% original blue finish with the balance a smooth brown patina. The breechblock and upper tang retain 30% original case colors with the balance a mottled gray patina. The stacking swivel has been altered. The stock is fine with some minor dings, pressure dents, and scratches, with a series of pressure dents behind the rear barrel band (right side).

B) The 1863 dated lock plate has the standard eagle/shield and "U.S. / SPRINGFIELD" markings with the breechblock dated 1870 with the eagle head/cross arrows over "US". Matching number on barrel and receiver. Blade front sight/bayonet lug and ladder rear sight, with sling swivels, two barrel bands, iron ramrod and two faint cartouches on the left stock flat.

Condition: Very good. The metal surfaces have been cleaned some time ago and are now aging again. The stock is also very good with the exception of a few minor gouges on the left side opposite lock, and some minor dings and scratches, along with some chipping along the ramrod channel. Mechanically excellent.
