Collector's Lot of Two U.S. Springfield Trapdoor Rifles -A) U.S. Springfield Model 1888 Ramrod Bayonet Trapdoor Rifle with Unit Markings
Manufactured in 1892, this is the final Trapdoor variation and has the unique ramrod-bayonet. The lock plate is marked with the standard "eagle/shield" motif and "U.S./SPRINGFIELD" ahead of the hammer. The low arch breechblock is marked "U.S./MODEL/1884". The left rear of the barrel has the "V/P/eagle head/P" proof and inspection marks and the letter "A" is marked on top. The left front of the receiver is marked with a small Maltese cross with the number 6 in the center, (significants unknown). The barrel is fitted with the Buffington rear sight with precise windage and elevation adjustments, and marked "R". Mounted with a one piece full oil-finished black walnut stock with a clear "SWP/1892" cartouche on the left wrist, circled script "P" directly behind the lower tang, a stamped "6" on the right side of the buttstock, "9/E/87" unit marking on the top of the comb and "US" marked buttplate tang.

Very good. The barrel has a smooth brown patina. The breechblock a smooth mottled grayish patina. The lock and hammer have a smooth mottled brown patina and the trigger guard retains 50% original blue finish. The revarnished stock is also very good with scattered minor dents, dings and scratches. The cartouche and unit markings are crisp and clear. The markings are clear. The action is fine.

B) U.S. Springfield Model 1879 Trapdoor Rifle with Bayonet and Sling
Blade front sight and ski-slope rear sight with elevation marking on the left side, and the ladder graduated to 1,200 yards and marked with an "R" on the upper left side of the blade and left side of the base. The barrel has the standard "V/P/eagle head/P" inspection marks with an "R" on the top. Low arch breechblock marked "U.S./MODEL/1873" and standard lock plate marking. Mounted with a smooth straight grip stock with a slotted button head iron cleaning rod with swollen shaft, 2 barrel bands, "SWP/1881" cartouche on the left flat, circled script "P" in the grip area, a small "H" stamped directly behind the lower tang and smooth "US" marked carbine style buttplate. Complete with a U.S. marked Model 1873 socket bayonet with a metal scabbard, leather frog and brass "US" hanger and a brown leather sling.

Very good. The barrel retains 70% faded original blue finish with wear on the muzzle end and some scattered light spotting. The hammer and lock have a smooth mottled dark gray patina. The breechblock retains 30% original case colors with a mottled gray patina on the balance. The trigger guard, lower tang and buttplate have a smooth mottled gray patina. The stock is good having been refinished with a coat of varnish some time ago and showing a minor crack on the left side ahead and above the trigger guard, and numerous minor dents, dings and scratches. The cartouche is clear. The markings are clear. The action is fine. The sling is very good. The bayonet is very good with most of the blue finish remaining, showing some light spotting on the blade and minor pitting on the socket. The scabbard is very good with some minor spotting, the frog shows some wear and flex cracking, and the hanger has an aged patina.
