Collector's Lot of Two U.S. Springfield Trapdoor Rifles -A) U.S. Springfield Model 1868 Trapdoor Two Band Rifle


A) The 1863 dated lock plate has the standard "eagle/shield" and "U.S./SPRINGFIELD" markings with the breechblock dated 1870 with the eagle head/cross arrows over "US". Blade front sight/bayonet lug and ladder rear sight, with a script letter cartouche (very faint) on the left stock flat, a circled "P" behind the trigger guard, iron ramrod and "US" marked buttplate.

Good as refinished. The receiver, lock, hammer, breechblock and barrel tang retain 80% of the blue finish with the remaining metal surfaces having a bright appearance with some mild pitting. The stock is very good with some chipping along the ramrod channel and some minor pressure dents. Mechanically fine.

B) "R" marked Buffington rear sight, with the rear of the barrel marked "A" on top and "V/P/Eagle Head/P" on the upper left. Low-arch breechblock, marked "US/MODEL/1873", with the eagle/shield motif next to "U.S./SPRINGFIELD" on the lock plate. Smooth straight grip stock, with two "U" marked barrel bands, "JSA/1895" on the left side and cleaning rod.

Very good. The rifle retains traces of original blue finish and traces of original case colors with the balance a smooth brown patina with light spotting. The stock is also very good with a hairline crack near the lock plate and a number pressure dents. Mechanically fine.
