Collector's Lot of Two U.S. Springfield Model 1903 Bolt Action Rifles -A) Early Springfield Armory Model 1903 Bolt Action Rifle with Sling, Bayonet and Scabbard

A) This example was manufactured in 1905 and subsequently altered to 30-06 caliber. The barrel is marked behind the standard front sight "S A/flaming bomb/05". The rear sight base does not have a hole to be pinned and the barrel appears to not have been or have the groove for an old pin. The bolt is marked "S35" on the bottom of the safety lug. Mounted on a smooth walnut straight grip stock with one reinforcing bolt, a boxed "B.H.M." cartouche on the left wrist, a circled script "P" proof on the bottom of the wrist and a smooth steel buttplate with trapdoor containing a nickel plated brass oiler. There is a small metal tag marked "1/54" sandwiched between the tang of the buttplate and buttplate screw. The handguard does not have spring clips or a sight notch. With a leather claw sling marked "BOYT/1918", a Springfield Arsenal Model 1905 bayonet dated 1908 and a leather covered scabbard marked "R.I.A./1909/H.E.K." on the backside.

Good. The metal components retain most of the original finish which has turned to a smooth plum patina. The receiver has a silvery gray/brown patina. The replacement stock has been varnished and remains very good with scattered scratches and dents. The sling, bayonet and scabbard are good. An interesting rifle that deserves more research!

B) Manufactured in late 1918. The barrel is marked "S A/flaming bomb/10- 18" behind the standard front sight. The bolt is marked with the steel lot code "J 5" on the bottom of the safety lug. Mounted on a smooth walnut straight grip stock with two reinforcing bolts, grasping grooves, a circled "P" proof on the bottom of the wrist and a smooth steel buttplate.

Fair as assembled with a smooth brown or gray patina on the balance. The heavily sanded, reoiled stock is fair with no visible cartouche. Mechanically fine.
