B) U.S. Springfield Armory Type III Model 1816 Flintlock Musket
This Type III Model 1816 musket was manufactured in 1831. The Model 1816 Musket was the primary infantry long arm during the Mexican War and many muskets were converted to percussion in the 1850s. They were extensively issued by both the Federal and Confederate armies during the first two years of the Civil War. This musket was converted to percussion and then re-converted to the flintlock configuration. The musket had an National Armory bright finish. The lock plate is marked "SPRING/FIELD/1831" in three vertical lines behind the hammer and "eagle/shield/U.S." stamped ahead of the hammer. The barrel tang is unmarked. "V/P" are visible on the left rear of the barrel. The stock is the correct full length military version. The left side stock flat is absent of any cartouches. The buttplate tang is marked "US" and there are no other visible inspection mark on the musket.
