Collector's Lot of Two U.S. Springfield Armory Model 1903 Bolt Action Rifles -A) Pre-World War I Production Springfield Armory Model 1903 Bolt Action Rifle


A) Manufactured in mid 1915 with the barrel marked "S A/flaming bomb/11- 15". The steel lot code marked on the bottom of the safety lug is "S". Mounted on a smooth walnut straight grip stock with a boxed "E.H.D." cartouche, grasping grooves, circled "P" proof and checkered steel buttplate with trapdoor (empty). With a leather claw sling marked "G.&K./1918/J.C.D.", a Springfield Armory Model 1905 bayonet dated 1907 and a leather covered scabbard marked "R.I.A./1907./F.P.B.".

Very good with traces of the original blue finish remaining with the balance a smooth brown patina. There are some scattered scratches, dings and high edge wear. The reoiled stock is also very good with scattered scratches and dings. The cartouches are legible. Mechanically excellent. The sling and bayonet are very good. The scabbard is good.

B) The barrel is marked "S A/flaming bomb/12- 17/A". The rear sight does not have the 2,850 yard volley notch. The bolt has the steel lot code "D 4" stamped on the underside of the safety lug. Mounted on a smooth walnut straight grip stock with grasping grooves, one reinforcing bolt, a boxed "J.F.G." cartouche, a circled script "P" proof and a fine checkered steel buttplate. With a Springfield Armory Model 1905 bayonet dated 1918 and a tan canvas covered scabbard with leather tip.

Good, 70% of the original blue finish remains on the replacement trigger guard assembly with some high edge wear, some scratches, some dings and a smooth brown patina overall on the balance of the metal. The reoiled stock is also good as sanded with some scattered dings, a 6 inch repaired crack at the rear of the handguard and legible cartouche. Mechanically excellent. The arsenal refinished bayonet is very good as is the scabbard.
