Collector's Lot of Two U.S. Model 1903 Bolt Action Rifles -A) Pre-World War II Springfield Armory Model 1903 Bolt Action Rifle


A) This example was manufactured in 1935 with the barrel marked "S A/flaming bomb/8- 35". The rear sight does not have the 2,850 yard volley notch. The bolt is marked with the steel lot code "N.S." on the top flat of the bent bolt knob. Mounted on a smooth walnut pistol grip stock with two reinforcing bolts, a boxed "S.A./S.P.G." cartouche on the left wrist, a circled "P" proof on the front of the wrist and a checkered steel buttplate with trapdoor housing a nickel plated brass oiler. With a leather claw sling stamped "W.T. & B. CO/1918/C.A.C.".

Fine, 70% of the slightly thin parkerized finish remains with scattered minor scratches and high edge wear. The reoiled stock is very good with a crack extending 1/2 an inch from the top tang, and some scattered scratches and dings. Mechanically excellent. The sling is good.

B) Manufactured in January of 1942 with the barrel marked "R A/flaming bomb/12- 41". The bolt is stamped with an "R" on the various parts. Mounted on a smooth walnut straight grip stock with an ordnance wheel and spurious boxed "R.L.B." cartouche on the left wrist, a circled "P" proof on the bottom of the wrist, two reinforcing bolts, grasping grooves and a smooth steel buttplate. With a leather claw sling with illegible stamp, a Springfield Armory Model 1905 bayonet dated 1906 and a green fiberglass scabbard.

Partially refinished, 70% of the parkerized finish remains with some scattered dings, some scattered scratches, some thinning and some high edge wear. The remarked, sanded and refinished stock is poor with sharp cartouche. Mechanically excellent. The bayonet is good as refinished and the scabbard is very good.
