A) Brown Arms Southerner 41 Caliber Brass Frame Derringer. Manufactured from the late 1860s to 1873. The top of the barrel is marked "SOUTHERNER" with "BROWN MF'G CO. / NEWBURYPORT, MASS. / PAT APR. 9, 1869" on the left. Silver plated brass frame with rosewood grips. Matching serial number on barrel, frame and grips.

Condition: Very good. The barrel retains traces of original blue finish with the balance a smooth dark patina with some pin point pitting. The frame retains 30% original silver plating with the exposed brass having an even aged patina. There is a long ding near a frame screw. The grips are fine with some scattered minor handling marks. The right panel has worn screw threads (panel not secured to frame). The action is excellent.

B) The top of the barrel is marked "SOUTHERNER" with "MERRIMACK ARMS & M'F'G CO. / NEWBURYPORT, MASS. / PATENTED APRIL 9, 1867" on the left. Iron frame with rosewood grips numbered to the gun.

Condition: Good. The derringer has a mottled gray patina with 60% silvered out original case colors remaining on the frame. The left and right barrel flats have tool marks near the muzzle. The grips are very good with some minor handling marks (more numerous on the bottoms) and a couple missing chips on the bottom edges. The action is fine.
