Fantastic archive of original black and white photographs, consisting of one 9 in. x 11 in., twelve 3 1/2 in. x 4 in., three 8 in. x 10 in., and one 5 in. x 6 in. The photographs were taken in February 1954 by serviceman Phillip J. Chavka in Korea, during a USO event at which Marilyn Monroe made an appearance. The photographs are of MM in an Army uniform arriving in a Jeep at the camp, and of her performance on stage in a slinky black dress, during which she sang "Diamonds Are a Girls Best Friend". At the time, MM had just married Yankees superstar Joe Dimaggio, and the two were on their honeymoon in Japan. Comes with a letter of provenance from Chavka, in which he states the circumstances, his proximity to Monroe, and the equipment used (Argus 33MM and 4x5 Graphix Plate camera). Most notably, he states that the original negatives were lost during shipment back to the U.S. from Korea, and these positives are the only images from his shoot to survive! The photographs remain in good condition overall, with some emulsion chipping and minor tears to a few. An excellent collection from the height of Marilyn's fame.
