Collection of Three Papago Wheat Stitched Baskets
Included in this lot is a collection of three Papago Indian hand woven, wheat stitched lidded baskets. The Papago Tohono O'odham (People of the Desert) are located in Arizona and are known for their weaving skills. These baskets feature tight weaving of yucca and bear grass. All three of these baskets are coiled and wheat stitched woven into a traditional pattern of simplicity. These baskets all feature lids with knobs on top of the lid. The largest basket features a tag that indicates it is an authentic Papago Indian handcraft basket; this one is made by Helen Garcia at Ventana. All three of these baskets are in good condition, with the medium sized one showing the most wear to the outside of the basket. The smallest piece measures 3 1/8" by 3 1/2"; the middle sized basket measures 3 1/2" by 4 1/2"; and the largest basket measures 4 3/4" by 6 3/4".
