an archive relating to John L. Stevenson, an Ohio Buckeye who sought his fortune in the gold and silver fields of Idaho Territory in the 1880s. Includes 8 stereographs of the town and mining operations around Bay Horse, Idaho, as well as two images of miners at the Ram's Horn and Excelsior Mine, along with a small clutch of letters and legal documents. Two of the letters are written by Stevenson mining friend Hiram Whims, both written from San Francisco and addressed to Stevenson in the gold fields. One (August 8, 1880) is filled with chatty news about prostitutes the two had frequented. I see Miss Feely this afternoon in the PM and she says she is going East in a short time. She had better go as she is about played out here now....Oh John I have a fine racket now up to Huddy's two young girls by the name of Pearl they are pretty as a picture...no hoodlums in them...I have a good time with them. A later letter, sent in 1890 suggests Hiram had married and settled into family life. Legal documents include Stevenson's 1881 deed for one quarter ownership of a mine near Crystal, Idaho, and various leases and mortgages for property. A fine group.
