Collection of 650+ First Day of Issue Envelopes
Included in this lot is a collection of over 650 “First Day of Issue” (First Day Covers) envelopes from 1950-1990's. “First Day Covers” are envelopes affixed with a stamp or stamps on the first day that they are made available for sale to the public. On the first day of issue, the envelope is stamped with a postmark and cancellation, indicating the date and location that the envelope was received into the postal service. On occasion, the postmark and cancellation are joined and form one continuous design: the postmark is the circular mark and the cancellation is the horizontal bars that are applied directly onto the stamp. This collection features numerous envelopes, some marked with names and addresses and some just displaying the stamps. All of the envelopes seem to be in good condition, showing no signs of damage.
