For your consideration is this Collection of 19th Century Pair Surgeon Bleeders. Although unmarked both these surgeon tools are in good condition and consistent with the bleeders from the 19th Century, around the Civil War Era. The first bleeder is comprised of three blades two with a spade edge and the third is a pocket knife type blade. The second set of bleeders shows three spade edge blades both are surrounded by brass. The art of bloodletting is the withdrawal of blood from a patient to prevent or cure illness and disease. Bloodletting, whether by a physician or by leeches, was based on an ancient system of medicine in which blood and other bodily fluids were regarded as "humours" that had to remain in proper balance to maintain health. It is claimed to have been the most common medical practice performed by surgeons from antiquity until the late 19th century, a span of almost 2,000 years. The measurements of these bleeders are 3 1/2" x 1 1/8" and 3 1/2" x 1 1/4".
