Collection Six Early American Manuscript Sermons Collection of Six Early American Manuscript Sermons
Collection of Six Early American Manuscript Sermons totaling more than 40 pages of amazingly tiny handwritten notes for sermons delivered between 1775 and 1797. The same minister wrote the first group of four and all were delivered initially in 1775 at a (likely Protestant) church in Philadelphia. Like many pastors, the authors of these used the same sermon more than once in different years and locations, as noted at the end of the texts. Scripture references used include Psalm 1:4 ("The ungodly are not so: but are like the chaff which the wind driveth away." KJV), Isaiah 3:10 ("Say ye to the righteous, that it shall be well with him: for they shall eat the fruit of their doings." KJV), and I Chronicles 12:18 ("Then the spirit came upon Amasai, who was chief of the captains, and he said, Thine are we, David, and on thy side, thou son of Jesse: peace, peace be unto thee, and peace be to thine helpers; for thy God helpeth thee. Then David received them, and made them captains of the band." KJV). The pages are 3.5" x 6" each and all are in fine condition. All include typewritten transcripts.

The next sermon is in the hand of a different writer, 24 pages in length, 3.75" x 6.5", first preached in July 1793, and uses Matthew 10:33 as its text ("But whosoever shall deny me before men, him will I also deny before my Father which is in heaven" KJV). Based on the length, my guess is that there were a few older gentlemen in the congregation getting nudged by their wives to stay awake! Very Good condition, some soiling and a bit rough at the edges.

The last item in this lot is a sermon from still another minister, at a Baptist church this time (as noted in the text). Five pages, 4" x 7" in size, first delivered at Philadelphia on December 24, 1797. It uses Job 29:12 as its text ("Because I delivered the poor that cried, and the fatherless, and him that had none to help him." KJV). Fine condition. Typewritten transcript included.

If you're as old as this cataloguer, you may have to grab your magnifying glass to read these, but they are certainly interesting and worth the effort. This material would be fascinating to a modern-day minister or bible scholar for reading and research. The message is timeless; could these sermons be "resurrected" and preached again two centuries later? From the Henry E. Luhrs Collection.
