For your consideration is this collection of Griswold and Wagner Ware cast iron skillet ashtrays. Starting with the Wagner Ware ashtrays, not much could be found regarding age. Both are marked "Wagner Ware / 1050". One of the ashtrays adds "Made in USA", along with an "R' after 1050; it is believed to be the newer of the two, made circa 1955. The other is believed to be circa 1940. The Griswolds present an interesting case. There are four round trays and one square. All marked with the Griswold cross logo, and all have a matchbook holder, except one. The square ashtray features a matchbook holder and has the small Griswold logo; it is from the 1950's, and is marked "Square Ash Tray / 770". Three of the round ashtrays also feature matchbook holders and block logos. They are further marked "Quality Ware / 00 Erie PA. / 570". These ashtrays were made circa 1936. The fourth round Griswold does not have a matchbook holder, but does feature the block Griswold logo. It is further marked "Quality Ware". Since Griswold made all of their ashtrays with matchbook holders, this piece is either a forgery or a transitional piece made after Griswold was acquired by Wagner. Either way, the casting is not as nice as the other Griswolds. All pieces show good overall condition for their age; they all measure about 4" x 7", excluding the cigarette rests.
