Colima Ceramic Masked Figure of Dancer
Masked Dancer
Colima
200 B.C. - A.D. 200
Buff ceramic
Height 10 1/2 in. Width 4 in.

A number of Colima figures of this exact iconography are known, including a large example in the Dallas Museum of Art. The costumed dancer wears a mask having a large, strongly projecting squared snout with prominent fanglike teeth. The nose is tipped by pointed, upthrust elements. A strap-held helmet develops into a large circular feathered fan not unlike headdresses worn by contemporary quetzales dancers of southeast Mexico. A two-part tailpiece fans rearward from the broad waist belt, balanced in front by a triangular flap. Crossed bands on the torso and double banding of the arms and legs complete the costume. The outstretched arms end in hands clasping four-part flexible dance wands, the right one missing and the left reglued. A whistle is incorporated in the head, with the mouthpiece where a right ear would be. The rear flap was broken off halfway down and has been reglued. Other than minor stains and chips, the condition is good.

Provenance
Dave DeRoche, Piedmont, California
