Scarce vintage circa mid-to-late 1930s glossy 6.25 x 8.25 photo of Hawkins in a dapper suit and tie taken at Ava Studios in London, signed and inscribed in fountain pen, "To my pal Harry, best wishes, Coleman Hawkins.” Reverse bears an Ava Studio copyright stamp. In very good to fine condition, with a tiny repaired tear to the upper left corner, a minuscule chip to the upper right corner, and a few small surface creases. The consignor notes that the recipient of this inscribed photograph was Harry Bacon, a preeminent London shirt maker and the brother of Max Bacon, one of the most significant drummers in Britain during the 1920s and 1930s. In late 1934, Hawkins accepted an invitation to play with Jack Hylton's orchestra in London, and toured Europe as a soloist until 1939. During his time in Europe, Hawkins recorded with Django Reinhardt and Benny Carter. On his return to the United States, Hawkins recorded a two-chorus performance of the pop standard 'Body and Soul,' a landmark of recording of the swing era.
