<B>Col. Samuel D. Sturgis, 7th Cavalry, Document Signed,</B></I> "<I>S.D. Sturgis</B></I>", one page with docketing, 11" x 17", Fort Meade, Dakota Territory, December 1, 1879. This "Tobacco Return" for a sergeant and several privates of the 11th infantry shows that they each received 16 ounces of tobacco for the month of December. Sturgis, a former Union General, was Custer's superior officer and the commander of the 7th Cavalry. He was not present at the Battle of Little Bighorn, however his son, 2nd Lieutenant James Sturgis, was killed in the battle along with Custer. Even light toning, fine condition.
