Col. Elijah Hunt Rhodes Miniature Cannon 1961-1965
For your consideration is this miniature wood cannon used by Col. Elijah Hunt Rhodes of the 2nd Rhode Island Infantry circa 1861-1865. Colonel Elijah Hunt Rhodes of the 2nd Rhode Island Infantry was the original owner of this unique and intricate wooden miniature cannon. It is thought that Colonel Rhodes used it on battle maps to depict artillery positions. Rhodes is best known for his fluent and thorough diaries, which were extensively used in the PBS program "Ken Burns' The Civil War." This artwork is accompanied by a letter of provenance from Col. Rhodes' direct grandson, Robert Hunt Rhodes, who confirms that it belonged to his great-grandfather. The wood cannon has been painted black and is securely attached to its base. The cannon moves freely and shows no signs of damage. The cannon appears to be modeled after the Parrott Rifle, which was used by both the Army and the Navy during the Civil War. It shows good condition overall with slight wear present and no signs of obvious damage. It measures 5 1/2" L x 2" W x 2 3/8" H and weighs 27.7 grams.
