Coclé/Azuero Pendant 2-monster Figures with padd
Pendant: Standing Monstrous Figures with Paddles
Coclé Province or Azuero Peninsula
A.D. 650 - 1520
Gold, Weight 122 grams
Height 2 7/16 in. Width 4 13/16 in.

Two frontal male human-bodied figures with crested crocodile heads stand side-by-side on a round bar which ends in knobs. Their heads turned outward, the figures hold large trapezoidal paddles in their outer hands, while their inner hands, fingers touching, grasp an inverted U-shaped twisted cord. A large double crest joins the two heads and forms a visual balance with the bottom bar. The double-bar handles of the paddles end at bottom in outward curves and each has two scutes on the outer edge; the effect is that of an abbreviated downward-facing profile crested crocodile head. The naked figures have double bands at waist and ankles and a triple band across the upper chest. The heads and the hands are fully three-dimensional in their development, so that they are as complete when seen from the back as from the front. The condition is excellent.

Provenance
Charles Craig, Santa Barbara
