Coast Salish Gathering Basket, approx. 9''x7''x7'' oval, ca. 1910. An oval shaped basket with curving sides that rise from a flat base with horizontal stripes woven in a technique known as ''ribbon-beading'', in bear grass leaf. Coiling is woven in cedar root. Many split stitches are seen on the exterior and the rim has a false braid pattern. The rim has loops of commercial twine, also buckskin leather, and one fragment of native fiber. With appraisal from Anthropological Consultants, Sebastopol, CA, who state this basket was purchased by a F.S. Quick from the Hudson Bay Co. in Seattle in the 1920s-1930s. Condition is good showing aboriginal use and rim wear. Est.: $400-$600.
