Coast Salish Gathering Basket, approx. 7.5''x5.5''x6'' high, ca. 1890 or earlier. This coiled oval-shaped basket has a base that is round with a clock-spring start. Striped designs spiral upward in two colors, natrual bear grass leaf and green-dyed bear grass. The foundation is a bundle of cedar. The weft is cedar root with split stitching on the exterior. The rim is plain coiled with some ribbon beading design in bear grass. Buckskin leather loops are on the rim. A single green stitch of dyed bear grass is seen on the side as a ''dau'' pattern (''dau'' is the mark of a very traditionally religious artist), according to appraisal from Anthropological Consultants, Sebastopol, CA, who state this basket was purchased by a F.S. Quick from the Hudson Bay Co. in Seattle in the 1920s-1930s. Condition is good. Est.: $400-$600.
