Coaldale,NV - Esmeralda County - 1899 - Coal Discovery and Discoverer Photograph :
Lot of four photographs tell a story about the town of Coaldale. Four photographs, two are dated 1899 and claim to be of William Groezinger, the discoverer of the Coal deposits near present-day Coaldale. He is posing in front of a mine shaft. Photographs measure approximately 7"x5", no mattes, one photograph has high contrast and sharp focus, and the other is of slightly lesser quality. Both photographs are credited to C.D. Walcott and bear a United States Geological Survey stamp. The veins at Coaldale were discovered in the late 1880s or early 1890s by William Groezinger. The Central Nevada Historical Society Membership card states that “The Deposits were discovered in 1893 by William ‘Jackass Billy’ Groezinger. Mining began in 1894 with coal being shipped Candelaria, Silver Peak, Fish lake Valley and other nearby locations…” The other two photos were produced as membership cards to the Central Nevada Historical Society. One is of Darms Coal Mining Company mine dating 1923, and the other is a photo of the old Coaldale station dating 1963. Both membership cards record a history of their respective images. The Darms Coal Mining Company photo discusses the discovery and early dissemination of coal in the region and the other talks about the history of the old Coaldale station. The station was founded in 1902 and serviced present-day junction of US 6 and US 95 until 1959. Nothing remains of the structure today.
