Clip point Bowie knife with reclining lion, coffin shaped pommel marked I Ppefer, John Co, Sheffield in 3 lines contained within shield on ricasso. The blade shows stamped ciphers "I am for use" in banner, Americaneagle with arrows, American hunting knife in banner, buffalo, 3 sets of 2 dogs, hunter firing rifle. The blade measures 9", 14-7/8" overall, the blade measures 1-1/4" across thickest part, the clip begins 4" back fromthe tip. The grip is of hardwood, probably rosewood, and shows a split down the center, German silver mounts; blade shows slight sharpening, minor polishing, some minor areas of pitting and erosion but generally good to very good with German silver mounted original period scabbard, scratched-in slogan "Draw me not without need nor sheath me without honor" which is mostly legible. The scabbard shows some small losses and tracesof gold gilt. The German silver tip and throat are retained. Est.: $4,000-$8,000
