Cleopatra (1963) Octavian Army Horse Solider Shield Prop
Cleopatra (1963) Octavian Army Horse Solider Shield Prop - "Cleopatra" (1963) is one of the most controversial and magnificently epic films ever produced. Perhaps known more for the romantic dalliances of Elizabeth Taylor and Richard Burton, than the staggering budget (which virtually bankrupted 20th Century Fox Studios), and Brobdignagian (as the press called it) colossal runaway production, it still boggles the mind with its eye-popping scale in cast, sets, costumes and action. Long before CGI, and with only minimal use of matte paintings and miniatures, this was the real thing. And one of the last movies to use real fall scale sets, extras, etc. Actually after several decades, this monumental motion picture actually made its money back and now enjoys a profit with every DVD, Blue-Ray and re-release. This is a screen used Horse-Soldier's Shield of Octavian's Army. These shields are seen to great effect in one of the most emotionally charged scenes when after strong pressure from Cleopatra (Elizabeth Taylor), Mark Antony (Richard Burton) finds himself literally alone on the morning of his battle against Caesar Augustus Octavian's (Roddy McDowall) advancing Army. After his loyal friend and confident Rufio (Martin Landau) kills himself, Antony, literally all alone, rides out to face battle. And with staggering courage, he goes against a massive line of Octavian's Horse Soldiers, using his sword against their shields. He tries to goat Octavian into a one-on-one combat, but in the end, facing his most humiliating moment in a stellar career, gives up, turns and flees back into the city. This hero production used shield is in excellent condition, showing some signs of battle. It is made of reinforced fiberglass, specially art-directed and painted to look like brass and wood. The original bolted loop-handles are still in the back. Approx 29"x22".
