Clayton,CA - Contra Costa County - 1916 - Wagon Full of Grain Photograph :
This is a photo of a horse drawn wagon full of grain ready for market. A man is holding the horses' reins. Measures 7" by 5." Matte measures 10" by 7 3/4." Contrast is high, although it is slightly washed out in the background. Focus is sharp. The driver's facial features appear clearly. The general photo condition is good - there is a barely visible smear in the background. The mounting is a bit damaged on the left hand side from masking tape and the matte has foxing. Photographer unknown. There is writing on the back noting "2 1/4 tons of wheat, white horse, Puss, Bay horse, Prince, Elmer T. Vert, Concord Calif, July 1916, Kirtland Ranch 1 1/2 miles from Clayton, Calif." Clayton is positioned north-northwest from Mount Diablo. The town, which began in 1856, was named after Joel Clayton. The town was a part of the California coal boom in its early days.
