<Our item number 110864><B>Clay, Henry.</B> &#40;1777-1852&#41; Statesman and orator; secretary of state; presidential candidate; called the &#34;Great Compromiser.&#34; Autograph Letter Signed &#34;<I>H. Clay</I>,&#34; as U.S. senator from Kentucky, one page, 6¾: x 4¼&#34;, Washington, 13 April 1850. Very fine. To Mr. Jos. G. Rosengarten of Philadelphia, regretting that he has no copy of his speech to send Rosengarten. &#34;<I>My own supply of them is exhausted, and I know of none to be obtained at the Printing offices or other places in this City</I>….&#34; With Free Franked transmittal envelope, addressed in Clay&#39;s hand to Rosengarten.<BR><BR>Thirty years after the Missouri Compromise, the issue of slavery once again threatened to tear the nation apart. On January 29, 1850, Clay presented to Congress a compromise that passed after eight months of debate. The Compromise of 1850 allowed slavery in the New Mexico and Utah territories while admitting California to the Union as a free state. I t included a new Fugitive Slave Act and banned the slave trade &#40;but not slavery itself&#41; in the District of Columbia.
