Claude McKay, Harlem, Negro Metropolis
Claude McKay, Harlem, Negro Metropolis (New York: E. P. Dutton and Company, Inc., 1940), first edition, 262 pages, illustrations, green-cloth binding with gold lettering, 8vo (8.75” x 5.5”). Jamaican writer Claude McKay (1889-1948) was a major figure of the Harlem Renaissance. His novels and poetry increasingly reflected his radical views and dissatisfaction with the nationalism of Marcus Garvey on one hand and the middle-class NAACP on the other. In 1928, his novel Home in Harlem won the Harmon Gold Award for Literature, but its frank depiction of African-American street life drew criticism from his hero, W. E. B. Dubois, who believed that such “licentiousness” would feed the racist attitudes of white readers. Harlem: Negro Metropolis features portraits of many African-American icons, including Ethel Waters, Marcus Garvey, A. Philip Randolph, and James Weldon Johnson (to whom the book is dedicated). This volume, a former Brooklyn Public Library book, is in good condition with moderate wear, acidification and some spotting.

Shipping: Books & Catalogs (view shipping information)
