French chemist (1748–1822). His contributions to chemistry include the analysis of ammonia and prussic acid and the discovery of the bleaching properties of chlorine. ALS in French, signed “Berthollet,” one page, 4 x 5, May 12, 1820. Letter to Monsieur Le Baron de Mevolon. In full (translated): “I have the honour to inform the Baron of Mevolon that the Municipal Council will meet at the Mayor’s office on Thursday the 18th at nine to discuss the present budget.” In very good condition, with horizontal fold through signature, scattered toning and soiling, pencil notation along top edge, small stain to top right, and a few stray ink marks. Accompanied by an unsigned engraved portrait.
