Important French composer (1862–1918) whose colorful, evocative works, particularly those for keyboard and for orchestra, exemplified the ‘impressionist’ style, and whose innovative use of harmonic and instrumental resources was a seminal influence on the emerging language of twentieth-century music. Autographed note, in French, on one of Debussy’s 4 x 2.5 personal calling cards, no date. A brief untranslated note to Andre Lebey. Archivally double matted and framed with archival corner tips, along with the original mailing envelope in Debussy’s hand, postmarked April 25, 1895, and a seated portrait of Debussy to an overall size of 17 x 13. In fine condition.

Andre Lebey was a poet, historian and novelist. Four months after sending this note to Lebey, Debussy finished the short score of his opera, Pelleas and Melisande. The full opera would finally premiere in 1902, an event that Lebey would be present for.
