Classic Sulphur Specimen
CLASSIC SULPHUR SPECIMEN

Cozzodisi Mine, Casteltermini, Agrigento Province, Sicily, Italy
Until the discovery of enormous sulfur deposits along the Gulf Coast was discovered; sulphur (or 'sulfur' as Yanks say it) was mined in various volcanic areas of the world. Sicily was a prime supplier, chiefly from under ground mines worked by hand. International market economics have closed those workings in favor of Frasch process operations associated with oil & gas fields. While the Sicilian mines were operating, a considerable number of stunningly large crystals and crystal groups were produced. All were eagerly incorporated into collections around the globe. This group features large (up to 1 ½ x 1 inch across) crystals strewn over a white calcite/aragonite matrix with the characteristic bitumen found with such crystal. There is minor damage to the back side of one crystal, otherwise fine. A classic museum specimen from a bygone time and place. It measures: 6 ¼ x 3 ½ x 2 ¾ inches deep.

Shipping: Requires 3rd Party Shipping (view shipping information)
