Classic Holland and Holland Royal grade full side lock double rifle in .450 express caliber factory marked on bottom of frame, “charge four drams and case 3 ¼ inches”. This Holland is numbered 16093 on Tang. The rifle measures 42 ½ inches over all with 26 inch barrels and weighs approximately 8 pounds. The frame and locks are beautifully engraved in classic Holland and Holland extra fine scroll motifs with Holland and Holland name in banner on each side of frame. The Tang is reinforced and extends onto the comb and is engraved to match. The rifle shows a stocking safety and gold inlaid letters safe. The barrel rib shows a nail file type matting with 3 leaf folding rear sites graduated to 250 yards. The rifle is stocked in fine quality walnut showing a good burl grain. The barrels show about 40% to 60% original blue drifting to a patina with some scattered light to moderate erosion and surface pitting. The markings on the barrel are still very sharp and show 98 New Bond St. address along with Winner of Field Trials and etc. The frame and mounts have been lightly cleaned with some minor pitting mostly on the trigger guard and Tang but still very sharp edges and crisp engraving. The stocks of been lightly refreshed but still show a very good wood to metal fit and just some slight wear to the checkering. The butt stock shows a number stamed in the butt B2151 which is probably an Indian registration number and there has been a owners plaque removed from the belly of the stock. The action is very tight and the bores are near fine and still very crisp and shiny. The rifle in our opinion should be restored by a London quality gunsmith. The rifle is contained within an original to the period leatherette over Oak case with brass mountings showing Holland and Holland label in lid but from an another rifle serial number 30359. This case has been associated with this rifle and shows some minor modifications with leather patches to carry this arm. The inside of the case is in very good condition with a light maroon to red velveteen ligning and shows some English accessories. With a Manton Company India label and two paper Holland labels along with the makers label at center. Royal grade Holland and Holland rifles are considered the opus of big game rifles and the replacement value on a new one of this quality would exceed $125,000 with a very long wait. Estimate $27,500- $55,000
