You are bidding on a Classic Colt Mfg. Model 1878 .45 Colt Double Action Revolver. The revolver features a 5 1/2" barrel, loading gate, extractor, rampant colt hard rubber grips, and double action. This was Colt’s first truly big bore double action revolver that was capable of handling the powerful .45 Colt cartridge. Along with the famed Single Action Army revolver, these were Colt’s offerings to those on the frontier who required a powerful holster or belt revolver capable of handling any situation- large or small, two-legged or four! This is a fine example with 5 ½” barrel and excellent mechanics- both single action where the hammer is first manually cocked and then fired by pulling the trigger, and double action in which a single pull of the trigger both cocks the hammer and fires the revolver. A fine Colt 1878, this one retains excellent Colt barrel markings on the top as well as “45 COLT” caliber marking on the barrel side. Original lanyard swivel intact (these often missing) and matching serial number on the frame and cylinder. Excellent hard rubber grips with the distinctive “rampant colt” logo at the top of each panel. Fine bore with deep rifling. Front sight has not been altered or filed (as is seen on many holster guns). This was a popular revolver with cowboys, lawmen, outlaws and hunters. They are often seen in photographs of rugged individuals in the West during the late 1800s to early 1900s. Serial number is 49743 indicating a 1903 manufacture date. Curio & Relic firearm. FFL transfer or NICS background check required.
